Description

This exhibition focused on figures or scenes based on the four great Chinese novels: the Romance of Three Kingdoms, the Water Margin, Journey to the West, and the Dream of the Red Cbamber. To sculpt the image and characteristics of each figure, Wu Jung-Tzu read the four novels slowly and in great detail with the help of presbyopic lenses. Wu tried to figure out how he could thoroughly explore each traditional image. Although he was familiar with Guan Gong, Zhao Zilong, and others, he still tried to find unique ways to sculpt them. Wu had to sculpt everything as realistically as possible to do the novels justice and put his own creative urges aside in order to win the acclaim of others. Using the basic principles of not showing the neck of a general, no broad shoulders for a lady, men's palms should turn outward, while ladies turn inward, Wu found his skills greatly tested. Working on the scuptures gave him great insight into how to exercise his strength and surpassed all the expectations he had set for himself.
