Fo Guang Big Buddha

2011

Location: Big Buddha Terrace

On the highest point along the central axis of the Buddha Museum sits a magnificent, colossal statue. The Fo Guang Big Buddha is a landmark in Taiwan and the largest copper-cast seated Sakyamuni Buddha statue in Asia. The Buddha holds a lotus mudra in the right hand, and the varada (wish-fulfilling) mudra in the left. The sculpture, which took 1,800 tonnes of copper and one and a half years to finish, was installed in 2011.
The Big Buddha sits at a height of 108 meters, which is equivalent to a 36-story building. The head of the statue alone is three stories tall, while a single eye is as wide as the whole floor of most other buildings. Venerable Master Hsing Yun commissioned this Buddha image to relay the concept of “I am a Buddha,” and inspire people to do good deeds, speak good words, and have good intentions.
