Seated Bodhisattva
960-1279
Location: Museum of Buddhist Underground Palaces
The Bodhisattva wears a high topknot and the bare chest is adorned with an ornament. The body is covered with a stole and a long dress that drapes naturally on the legs. The right leg is lifted and the right arm rests on the right knee, while the left hand supports the body. Such images are usually sculpted with lotus seats. The bodhisattva gazes downward at the reflection of the moon in the water, which symbolizes the concept of“form is emptiness.”Such images are thus commonly referred to as “Water-moon Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.”
