Yungang Grottoes Art Exhibition
The Northern Wei geographer Li Daoyuan described the Yungang Grottoes in his Commentary on the Waterways Classic (Shui Jing Zhu) as follows: "Carved into the mountains, built upon the rock, with imposing statues that the world has rarely seen. Mountain halls and water pavilions, smoke-filled temples stand in view, and the forested streams and brocade-like reflections delight the eyes."
A World in A Seed: Yungang Grottoes Art Exhibition showcases the rich history and artistry of the Yungang Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage site carved in 460 AD. Renowned for their grandeur, the grottoes reflect three phases: the majestic Tan Yao Five Grottoes, royal-sponsored carvings, and intricate commoner-crafted designs. This exhibition will offer you an enriching journey into the artistic and spiritual legacy of the Yungang Grottoes, a testament to the cultural vibrancy of the Northern Wei dynasty.
