Fo Guang Shan's Green Journey: A Vision for the Future
Fo Guang Shan is taking giant steps towards a sustainable future! In a remarkable collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment, Fo Guang Shan inaugurated its state-of-the-art Environmental Education Facility and launched the captivating permanent exhibition "New Generation of Green – Eco-Marvels in Everyday Life" on July 19 at the Buddha Museum's Front Hall.
The ceremony was a star-studded affair with notable figures including Most Venerable Hsin Bao, Minister of Environment 環境部 Peng Chi-Ming, Kaohsiung Mayor 陳其邁 Chen Chi-Mai, Acting President of the Buddha’s Light International Association Venerable 慈容法師 Venerable Tzu Jung, Buddha Museum Director Venerable Ru Chang, Deputy President of the Fo Guang Shan University Consortium Lin Tsung-Ming, and Environmental Protection Administration Director Yen Hsu-Ming. The presence of officials from the Environmental Protection Administration, the National Environmental Research Academy, the Legislative Contact Group, and the Kaohsiung Environmental Protection Bureau added to the event's significance.
Receiving certification for its environmental education facilities, Fo Guang Shan showcased its commitment to sustainability. Minister Peng Chi-Ming not only attended the unveiling ceremony but also led an enlightening dialogue on environmental protection and the practical steps towards a net-zero future, joined by Most Venerable Hsin Bao and Venerable Ru Chang.
Since opening its doors in 2011, the Buddha Museum has been a beacon of environmental education and sustainability. Built with green building concepts and energy-efficient equipment, the museum has held ISO 50001 certification for international energy management systems since 2014. On June 1, 2022, the museum took a significant step by signing a "Net-Zero Vision, Green Action" memorandum with the Ministry of the Environment. Recognized for its efforts, the vegetarian buffet and Waterdrop Tea Houses were designated as "green restaurants" last year. In 2023, the museum's dedication was honored with the ESG’s “Energy Management Award,” and it achieved ISO14064-1:2018 carbon inventory certification from BSI. Adding to these accolades, the museum received certification for its environmental education facilities on April 23, 2024, and was awarded the Ninth National Environmental Education Award in July 2024.
These achievements highlight Fo Guang Shan’s unwavering commitment to the principles of environmental and spiritual protection championed by its founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Embodying the Three Acts of Goodness (do good deeds, speak good words, think good thoughts) and the Four Givings (give others confidence, give others joy, give others hope, give others convenience), Fo Guang Shan continues to inspire and promote a net-zero green lifestyle for all. The Buddha Museum is ambitiously progressing towards becoming a low-carbon museum by 2030, with the ultimate goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
